Yeats read Coleridge after 1925 and could balance his work with the abstraction of the philosopher. This paper, by comparing their poems, studies how Coleridge and Yeats in their situations accept tragedies and sublimate them in their poems. Yeats thinks that man could understand life only when he understands tragedy: thus, one of the main elements in his poetry is tragedy. Both Yeats and Coleridge make attempts in their poems to turn tragic moments and situations into joy. The two poets wrote two great poems: Coleridge, “Dejection: An Ode” and Yeats, “Lapis Lazuli.” On reading these two poems, I find them strikingly similar in the subject matter and moods as well. On the subject of children, the paper discusses Yeats and Coleridge, by looking at their own child in their poems. In tragic situations, each poet could see human weakness but imagine the future with hopes, as exemplified by Coleridge’s “Frost at Midnight” and Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter.”
