This study was intended to perform a paper-folding program on delinquent adolescents onprobation, and thereby investigate whether the program positively affects their anger
management, aggression, and self-esteem.
As for data survey, this researcher conducted self-administered questionnaire survey on male
delinquent juveniles held at the juvenile protection education institute located at D. For
investigation on the effects of this program, prior-test and post-test were conducted in terms
of anger management, aggression, and self-esteem.
As for data analysis, SPSS/WIN 19.0 program was used in performing frequency analysis,
descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test with 66 study subjects' data, which could be used
as paired samples.
The main results from this study are presented as follows.
First, the study subjects were a total of 66 male delinquent juveniles. With respect to age,
37 study subjects (56.1%), the highest number, were 17-18 years old. In terms of education, 25
study subjects (37.9%), the most number, were expelled from middle schools. And, in terms of
program participation frequency, 52 study subjects (78.8%), the most number, participated in the
paper-folding program three times.
Secondly, the analysis on the effects of the paper-folding program on male delinquent
juveniles' anger management revealed that, in 3-point Likert scale, the prior-test's mean value
was 1.67, and the post-test's mean value was 1.49. Therefore, there was significant difference
in the value (p<.001). Regarding the mean value difference in aggression between the prior-test
and the post-test, in 4-point Likert scale, the prior-test's mean value was 2.13, and the
post-test's was 1.88. Regarding the mean value difference in self-esteem between the prior-test
and the post-test, in 5-point Likert scale, the prior-test's mean value was 3.43, and the
post-test's was 3.89. As a result, it was found that the paper-folding program helped reduce
male delinquent juveniles' anger and aggression, and improve their self-esteem.
Thirdly, according to the analysis on the changes in their anger management, aggression, and
self-esteem depending on their age, in the case of those aged between 13 and 16, there was
statistical significance in terms of self-esteem. That is, their self-esteem was found to be
improved. In the case of those aged between 17 and 18, their anger and aggression lessened,
and their self-esteem improved. Therefore, there was statistical significance in terms of anger,
aggression, and self-esteem. In the case of those aged 19 or more, there was significant
difference in aggression so that the program was found to be effective for reducing aggression.
Fourthly, according to the investigation on the changes in their anger management,
aggression, and self-esteem depending on education, all of the education groups, except for a
group of those who are in high schools or graduated from high schools, showed statistically
significant difference in anger management, aggression, and self-esteem. As a result, it was
found that the performance of this program was effective.
Therefore, this study was meaningful in the point that the paper-folding program was
positively effective for lessening male delinquent juveniles' anger and aggression and improving
their self-esteem.
In addition, this study provides some future research suggestions in the point that the
paper-folding program can be utilized as a program in the character education and psychological
treatment areas necessary to cultivate emotional character of delinquent juveniles and change
their behaviors.
