This study observes and analyzes the pattern of pedagogical interactions between preserviceteachers and students in Korean regional geography classes of high schools to enhance their
teaching professionalism through action research. For this, geography classes were observed and
analyzed using Hyman’s system for observing pedagogical interactions. The major results are as
follows: First, the proportion of teachers’ teaching behavior was high in all classes, but students’
structuring and soliciting behaviors were meaningfully presented in some classes. Second, preservice
teachers’ questioning was realized as the mainly target of the whole class, and their position
was the lecture desk site during the class. In addition, pre-service teachers’ eyes were directed at
their right-hand side or at student groups at specific sites. Therefore, some blind spots were
distributed to the left of pre-service teachers and to the last seat in the class, which was the site of
students not participating in the class. Third, there were 28 patterns of pedagogical interactions:
teachers’ structuring moves (10), soliciting moves (12) and students’ structuring moves (2) and soliciting moves (4). Finally, there were 6 common and basic interaction patterns across all classes.
These results suggest pre-service teachers’ obvious realization of good teaching practices and their
practice efforts for active interactions with their students. In addition, reflective practice tasks based
on these results were applied to pre-service geography teachers.
