This study explored the relationships of children’s outdoor play behaviors withchildren’s gender, their temperament and outdoor environment. A total of 77 5-year-old
children(34 boys and 43 girls) were observed. Results show that, first, physical play
was majority of outdoor play behaviors, followed by creative play and non-play activity
in an order of presence. Children's outdoor play behaviors were significantly correlated
with the children’s gender in games free from a rule, large muscle activity, games with
rules, pretend play, manipulation-pretend play, and non play activities (exploration and
gardening). Second, in terms of child’s temperament, children with mild temperament
seemed to enjoy the games with rules and manipulation-pretend play. Children in better
outdoor play environment enjoyed games with rules, physical manipulation play,
manipulation-pretend play, pretend play, and constructive play. Third, among three
factors (outdoor environment, gender, and temperament), the outdoor environment
was the most powerful factor impacting the types of outdoor play behavior. The
implication of the results suggested that outdoor environment and support system,
safety and monitoring, and the support for teachers to be able to extend outdoor play
were more influential factors than child’s gender or temperament. Teachers need to
monitor the quality of the outdoor play by facilitating the balance of children’s physical
and creative play to support the educational value of outdoor play.
