The present study aims to explore the meaning of motherhood as experienced by
female marriage immigrants in multicultural families. Married immigrant women
undergo huge changes in their lives when marrying a Korean, and experience life as a
mother while their various personas and roles overlap with these changes. Motherhood
is more complex and special in regard to the experiences widely observed amongst
mothers raising young children or in the 'motherhood' experience of married
immigrants. The present study utilized the narrative research approach, a qualitative
research method. A total of 5 married immigrants participated in this study, hailing
from countries including Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, and China. The research
showed that participants, due to the lack of prior knowledge of being a mother, have
undergone hardship in attaining motherhood. Because they are from foreign countries,
the hardship has been exacerbated by the cultural differences as well as the language
barriers. The majority of participants have sense of responsibility, even guilty feelings,
for not performing the role of mother adequately. However, we learned that their
children provided them with psychological comfort, and that the process of
'motherhood' served as a reason for persevering with life in Korean society as well as
being an impetus for them to overcome the difficulties of life as immigrants. In sum,
the intention of this study is to create a support system based on a sense of sympathy,
understanding and trust in mothers from multicultural families and assist them
somewhat in becoming good mothers.
