This study aims to evaluate the development and application of a mentoring program betweenfive-year-old and third-grade children. Based on initial results from the pilot study, modifications were
made to develop the final version of the mentoring program. 27 children from M kindergarten and
9 children from M elementary school located in Seoul participated in the program. Mentoring took
place once a week for twenty weeks at M kindergarten. Data was collected continuously in the
following manner: written observation reports of the kindergarteners; interviews with both the
children and the teachers; video recordings of the mentoring sessions; materials used in the mentoring
sessions; questionnaires for the children’s parents; and a research diary written throughout the
program. The findings of the study are summarized as follows. First, the mentoring program works
well to develop a good relationship between the mentor and the mentees. Second, both the
kindergarteners and the elementary school students develop pro-social behavior. Third, certain
mentoring activities are effective in helping the kindergarteners prepare for elementary school. Fourth,
the reflective thinking used for mentor education contributes to the success of the mentoring
program. Lastly, both the mentors and the mentees have more pride in their respective institutions
after the mentoring program.
