This study first looks into the mediating effects of peer alienation and mobile phoneaddiction in connection with how parental abuse and neglect influence adolescent
depression; it then discusses ideas for how to intervene in order to address adolescent
depression. In order to achieve the research goal, the study used data gained from
the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, which was conducted for three years
on first-year middle school students. It then analyzed a total of 2,259 research targets
through a structural equation model. Findings of the research revealed that both
parental abuse and neglect have immediate effects on adolescent depression, and that
parental neglect affects depression more greatly than abuse does. In terms of the
influence of parental neglect and abuse on depression, the study confirmed that peer
alienation and mobile phone addiction both have partial mediating effects. Regarding
channels through which parental neglect and abuse affect adolescent depression, the
study found that they mediate peer alienation and mobile phone addiction in that
order; also, the indirect influence of parental abuse on depression appeared to be
more severe than that of parental neglect. Focusing on these research results, the
study offers social welfare intervention strategies and suggestions to address adolescent
depression in the perspective of children’s rights.
