This study examines how campaign events affect voters’ party affiliations and partisans’ vote
intentions during Korean presidential campaigns. Voters’ party support fluctuates during Korean
presidential campaigns because voters update their evaluations of their party affiliations through
campaign events over the course of the campaign. Campaign events provide voters with the
information about the parties and their candidates during the campaign. With the information, voters
become more informed about the electoral relevance of their party affiliations, update their
evaluations on the parties, and adjust their party support. This function of campaign events explains
changing party affiliations during the campaign. As voters become more aware of the electoral
relevance of their party affiliations, the influence of party identification on vote intentions becomes
greater over time. As a result, partisans develop more homogeneous intentions within groups and
more heterogeneous intentions across groups over time.
