The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between young children’s
picky eating behavior and their social skills and problem behaviors. 416 mothers of four
or five year-old children filled out a questionnaire on their child’s eating behaviors,
social skills, and problem behaviors. T-test was conducted to examine the differences
between picky and non-picky eaters in their eating behaviors, social skills, and problem
behaviors. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between picky
eaters and non-picky eaters’ social skills and problem behaviors and such difference
was related to children’s age. Picky eaters’ eating behaviors were positively related to
problem behaviors such as overaction and anxiety and negatively related to social skills
including independence and cooperation. These findings suggest that picky eating
behaviors are correlated with children’s social skills and problem behaviors.
