This literature review is intended to define the concept and the component factors ofresilience that early childhood teachers have and to present ways to improve their
resilience. Early childhood teachers’ resilience is the result of interactions between
internal factors and external protective factors in order to overcome difficulties in
practicing the teaching profession, and it means a capability to maintain personal and
professional satisfaction. Internal factors describe personal characteristics, and external
protective factors represent factors which preserve and reinforce teachers’ resilience.
Internal factors include psychological, behavioral, cognitive, and social factors, and
external protective factors include personal environmental, relational environmental,
and organizational environmental factors. Thus early childhood teachers’ resilience is a
complex ability. Various efforts by personal, institutional, and national dimensions are
essential to improve the resilience. This study is significant in defining the concept of
teacher resilience, reflecting the complex characteristics of resilience currently
presented in the literature. It lays the foundation for comprehensive understanding of
early childhood teachers’ resilience including factors associated with resilience as a
teacher, which is distinguished from resilience of the general public. These are internal
factors such as efficacy, the sense of purpose, the sense of calling, and teaching skills,
and external protective factors such as relationships with colleagues, the director of the
center, parents of children, and organizational culture. This study implies the
importance of in-depth studies on early childhood teacher’s resilience and the
compounding factors.
