This study has examined a case of art and health integrated classes ascommunity-based art education to enhance health literacy. Today, development of
contemporary communities has been centered upon the city, and health and
sustainable development have been one of the most important tasks in the 21st
century. The study has explored the concept of health literacy and its values and
current status as well as development of ‘Health Cities’ movement. By identifying
researches on integrated programs in ‘arts and health’, which started in the field
of medicine and public health, I have suggested that creativity, expression, and
identity as the characteristics of arts, which contribute to health and well-being of
the community. As a Korean case of community-based art education with a focus
on art and health integration, the study has examined and discussed ‘2014 Cultural
Health Project’ and its educational outcomes. The project has been implemented
by Junggu Community Health Center with the collaboration of Arts+Medicine
Convergence Research Center of Kookmin University and ArtsMedi Platform.
During art and health integrated classes for elementary students, children could
understand the phytochemicals and its functions with art activities using fruits and
vegetables and change their perceptions of healthy eatings and diets. During the
classes for elder people, they had benefit in their mental health through expression
of their thoughts and feelings, and sense of belonging. This study is valuable for
it suggests a Korean case of community-based art education for enhancing health
literacy and provides a foundation of interdisciplinary study of art and health.
