This study is intended to research the aspects of conception on the "changes of matter" among middle school students' in each grade and to analyze the misconceptions surrounding them. For this study, 648 middle school students in Jeonju City were random-sampled. The instruments used for this research consisted of seventeen items. ANOVA was conducted to see whether there were any differences in the students' conception, of the "changes of matter, " and whether these changes differed between each grade. In result, there were significant differences in the students' conception on the "changes of matter." These differences also were apparent from grade to grade(F=7.358, p<.01). From these differences, we were able to deduct four different misconceptions, rather than correct conceptions. First, when going about the course of the "changes of matter, " students did not perceive the movement of heat. Secondly, the students perceived incorrectly that mass changes in spite of the unchanged mass. Third, they perceived incorrectly that properties of material change despite the unchanged properties of material. Finally, they perceived incorrectly that gas, which is unable to be seen, can't be changed into a solid matter. In addition, they failed to see that there is no possibility of a direct change from the solid state into a gas form without reaching a secondary step of liquid first. To correct the students' misconceptions and make them have more of a scientific concept, it is necessary that various models of scientific investigations be designed and applied to a class situation. Also, more study will be demanded to find out the cause of the initial misconceptions found when studying the course of change in matter.
