This study developed and analyzed the effects of a self-identity development program based on
Bandura's observational learning theory while incorporating role model exploration methods for teenagers
residing at a protection facility. Role Models selected for the modelling program were those who fulfilled
at least one of the following criteria: 1) Models who lead successful lives despite their difficult
environments, 2) models who have a clear vision of life, and 3) models who are well known and also
respected in society. The study was carried out with a total of 26 participants divided into a control
(n=13) and experiment group (n=13). The program was carried out with the experiment group, and
analysis of the gain scores measured by a self-identity evaluation scale revealed an overall positive change
in the self-identity of the experiment group. Significant positive effects also appeared in 4 (Goal-orientation,
Proactiveness, Self-directedness, Intimacy) of the 6 sub-components of the self-identity scale. Content
analysis of the worksheets filled out by the experiment group indicated a high number of expressions of
self-identity. Results of this study demonstrate that role models whom teenagers can easily relate to,
reflection and personal interpretation of the role models, and implementation of Bandura's theory of
observational learning can contribute to a positive change in self-identity for troubled teenagers.
