This study aimed to verify how individual’s experiences in extracurricular activities in
secondary education have influenced each student’s academic and physical skills or human
relationship in their university life.
Extracurricular activities are recently deeply penetrated among majority of students in
secondary education in Japan. This study aims to verify the effects by the activities,
through the literature studies and a statistical analysis of a questionnaire survey, conducted
among 514 students in Teacher-training Course at University of S and University of I.
As a result, the activities proved its effects on academic skills as “temporary”. The
activities also provided “Communication skills” in human relationship and “Endurance” in
physical skills. In addition, the activities greatly influenced human relationship, especially
through the practical job training and university-life. The higher the importance a student
felt, the stronger bonds obtained with the peers of the activities.
As a conclusion, extracurricular activities provide opportunities of mutual support with
peers through an interactions, leading to an enriched humanness, which cannot necessarily
be obtained through curriculum learning. It has also led their lives highly enriched.
However, acquisition of “continuous habit in studying” shall be the challenges for the
future.
