Abstract
The goal of this investigation was to explore art therapy and its use in treating depression, which lead to the research question “Is art therapy an effective treatment for depression?” The investigation begins by discussing depression and presenting a brief overview of its diagnosis, treatment, and related statistics. The history of art therapy is then outlined and art therapy’s use is discussed in relation to depression. The paper also explains how art therapy treats depression by changing the patient’s perspective about themselves and the surrounding environment. Finally, methods used for measuring depression scores are briefly explained in order to facilitate understanding of the studies that have tried to measure art therapy’s success as a treatment for depression.
The paper examines different studies, journal and theories in order to investigate the effectiveness of art therapy in treating depression in different participant groups.
