한국어 초록

전국시기에 ‘변자’로 지칭되는 많은 논객들이 각국을 편력하면서 유세에 종사하였다. 당시 권력계층은 이들을 후대하여 자신의 정략에 이용하기도 하였다. 따라서 이들은 본래 어느 학파에 국한되었된 것이 아니며, 당시 유가와 묵가처럼 학파로서 존재하였던 것이 아니다. 따라서 당시의 제자백가는 넓은 의미에서 모두 명가로 포괄할 수 있다. 그렇다면 이른바 묵가와 명가의 사상적 특색은 어디에서 비롯한 것인가? 이 글은 묵변에 보이는 명가와 관련된 것으로 보이는 묵변의 명제 분석을 통해서 양가의 차별성과 사상사적 의미를 검토하기 위한 것이다.
묵가는 변설의 개념 분석과 목적을 설정하고 제가를 비판하였다. 물론 이것은 자신들의 정치 윤리적 관점을 선양하고 이와 관련하여 타가의 비판에 대응하기 위함이었다. 특히 후기 묵가의 작품으로 여겨지는 묵변에는 대량의 명제가 제시되고 있는데 상당 부분이 제가비판과 관련이 있으며, 자신의 명실론 체계와 밀접한 관계에서 정립된 것으로 보인다. 이것은 당시 순자가 제가를 논리적으로 분류하여 비판한 것과 여러 면에서 유사하다. 다만 묵경에서 제시되는 명제는 순자보다 분류 면에서는 애매한 경우가 많으나, 내용 면에서 본다면 훨씬 다양하고 논리적으로도 더욱 치밀한 것으로 보인다.
묵변에서 이상과 같이 분석과 인식을 할 수 있었던 것은, 첫째로 실천적인 묵자의 명실론에 기본적 토대를 둘 수 있었고, 둘째로 제가와의 변설과 상호 비판을 통하여 그들의 합리적 요소를 수용하여 보충⋅발전시킬 수 있었으며, 셋째로 전국 시대에 자연과학과 기술이 장족의 발전을 거듭하여 외부세계에 대한 인식이 보다 발달하였다는 데서 기인한 것이다. 이러한 조건들은 묵변에서 모든 개념의 정의와 설명에 있어서 경험세계의 객관적인 사례를 제시하는 것으로 드러난다.

영어 초록

During the Warring States Period, many debaters called ‘logicians’ wandered about different countries and engaged in campaigns. The ruling class of those times gave a warm welcome to them and sometimes used them for their political scheme. Therefore, they were not limited to a certain school, and didn't exist as a school like Confucianism or Mohism of those times. Accordingly, Hundred Schools of Thought of those days can be included in the School of Names in a broad sense. Then, where are the so-called ideological characteristics of Mohism and the School of Names from? This paper aims at analyzing the propositions related to the School of Names in Moists' Analysists, and examining the differences between them and ideological meanings. Mohism analyzed the concept of speech, set a goal and criticized all the schools. Of course, it was for the purpose of enhancing their own political and ethical viewpoints and coping with criticism from other schools regarding this. Particularly, large quantities of propositions were suggested in Moists' Analysists considered as a work of the latter part of Mohism, whose most parts were related to the criticism on all the schools, and it seems to have been established in close relation to its Theory of Names and Reality system. In many aspects, it is similar to that Xunzi classified all the schools logically and criticized them. Yet, the propositions presented in Mojing were uncertain in terms of classification compared to Xunzi, but in terms of contents, it looks much more diverse and logically precise. The analysis and recognition above were possible in Moists' Analysists because, first, it was based on Mozi's practical Theory of Names and Reality, second, it accepted all the schools' reasonable elements through the eloquence and mutual criticism with them, supplemented and developed itself, and third, natural science and technology developed greatly during the Warring States Period, so understanding of the outside world was improved more. These conditions are revealed in Moists' Analysists through the presentation of objective examples of the reality in the definition and explanation of all concepts.
