The Desire of Kalypso: The Love beyond the Desire
The beautiful nymph Kalypso who wanted to have the love of Odysseus, eventually freed him from her island, because she realized that she could not keep him when she saw him weeping. She loved him so much she could let him go. Even if she could not accomplish her desire, she learned how to love him: she sacrificed for him.
Kalypso means “I will conceal” in Greek. Like her name, she concealed Odysseus from the world for seven years. Desire is an emotion where people are longing and hoping for something, and it motivates the action of the people. When Odysseus came to the island of Ogygia, Kalypso fell in love with him and she had desire for him. Her desire is that she wanted to live with him forever in Ogygia.
