General Plan
Here, as can be seen from the general plan, the key is the geometrical construction called the Golden Section, which is developed from the square enclosing the medical laboratories.
Structure and construction are integrated in the laboratory buildings, whose supporting columns by the service shafts-like tree-trunks-carry tapering cantilever arms as “branches” and shape the appearance of the façade.

Ground Floor Plan
The ground plan of the labs shown here comes from Kahn`s office and shows an asymmetrically arranged system of corridors that questions the centred figure of the square and creates a conventional system of offices on either side of a corridor

Constructional pattern of a floor plan element
1. Despite the accumulation of figures of the same kind composition does not seem rigid :unlike the double axial symmetry of the Trenton Bath-house the parts are linked asymmetrically around a centre, and the figure of the Medical Research Building is itself set in motion.

2. It is clear that Kahn does not just choose a square frame to establish the dimension of the figure, but develops all parts of the design within a grid. This is an 8 foot grid, which defines the outline of the central building and its rear towers, the laboratory areas and the linking corridors, but also all important interior wall positions.

3. The main double-crossing Vierendeel support structure 16 feet apart directs the forces outwards and creates a support-free interior. In between are the secondary elements, also cruciform and constructed in the same way. An edge beam with tapering cantilever arms, invoking the succinct façade figure, frames the square
