Until today, Australia has been a responsible uranium supplier. As a member of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty states, Australia has been sold uranium mostly to the countries who signed NPT. That is, Australia sells its uranium for the development of electricity generation, not for the development of nuclear bombs. On 16th August 2007, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard said that Australia will sell uranium to India for energy generation purpose. His gesture seemed like a strategic plan to strengthen the alliance relations among the Asia-Pacific region, particularly, with the U.S. and India. Mr. Howard tried to find the way to maintain the close relations with the present and potential superpowers. However, in 2008, when Kevin Rudd became the Prime Minister of Australia, he reversed Mr. Howard’s plan. He reinstated the policy as India still did not sign the treaty.
Opponents of the uranium sale to India suggest several reasons. First, they point out environmental impact caused by uranium mining. Uranium ore is a low-level radioactive and energy-efficient material. Moreover, it is well-known environment-friendly material as it produces significantly lesser carbon dioxide than fossil fuels. However, copious amount of carbon dioxide are produced through out the process of mining and milling and it is expected to be increased since the ore need to be dug out from deeper places now.
