본문내용
Prepositions are a challenge for learners at every level of proficiency at they can occur as part of a phrasal or as a prepositional verb. In case of ‘call off’ and ‘lie about’, they seem alike in that they both have a verb + preposition form. However, ‘call off’ is a phrasal verb and the meaning of ‘call off’ (cancel) cannot be well determined by just understanding what ‘call’ means and connecting it to the meaning of ‘off’. On the other hand, ‘lie about’ is a prepositional verb and its meaning can easily be determined by its single-word verb. However, as we cannot always distinguish the phrasal verb from the prepositional verb like this, different syntactic tests can be used to determine whether a verb + preposition sequence has the structure of phrasal verb or the structure of prepositional verb. One test involves particle movement. If a sentence had the phrasal verb, it is possible to move its particle, but not with the prepositional verb.
