Barthes: Between Theory and Writing
There are singular difficulties in the task of exposition of the work of Roland Barthes. How to find the meaning of the theorist who taught us to unpack the conditions in which meanings become possible? How to express the significance of the critic who sought to `unexpress the expressible?` How to narrate the intellectual life of a thinker and writer of fragments. of the dispersal of meanings?

How to pin down the legacy of the theorist, critic and writer who proposed analytical codes and categories only to exceed them, and to leave them in his wake as an obstacle to writing when they had once been a provocation to write? This chapter traces the interplay of theorist and writer in the work of Barthes, giving a sense of the movement and the activity of thought that Barthes both performs and bequeaths us, as he multiplies the sites of critique, theory and writing. For while Barthes is known primarily as a critical and literary theorist his theorising was mobile never ossifying into stricture or systematising dogma.
Barthes was born in Cherbough, France, in 1915. His youth was marked by illness, tuberculosis, and he spent 1934 and between 1941 and 1946 in sanatoria in the Alpst. He worked as a journalist and a teacher, gaining his first academic post in 1960. During the evenements in France of May 1968, Barthes was associated with the left wing, theoretically and aesthetically avant garde journal Tel Quel.
