본문내용
일반적으로 소설은 그것이 쓰여진 환경과 시대를 바탕으로 하기 마련이다. 다시 말해서 소설은 그 시대에 만연된 사회풍토를 바탕으로 작품화된다는 것이다. 따라서 우리는 당대의 생활방식, 작가의 도덕관, 그리고 사회적 가치체계를 작품 속에서 쉽게 발견하게 된다.
이러한 전제에서 볼 때 Wuthering Heights는 Emily Bronte를 일약 유명작가로 만들어준 매우 특색 있고 희귀하며 놀라울 만큼 이색적인 작품이다. 그 당대 독자들의 문학적 욕구에 대해 David Daiches는 다음과 같이 언급한다.
The Victorian novel-reader did want to be entertained with a minimum of literary convention, a minimum "esthetic distance." He wanted to be close to what he was reading about, to have as little suspension of disbelief as possible, to pertend, indeed, that literature was journalism, that fiction was history.
