(1) Engine: A car uses controlled explosions to make it move. The important bit in a car is called the cylinder. A cylinder is to think of a syringe. Like a syringe, a cylinder has a central piston that moves up and down inside the outer cylinder. It is this movement up and down that eventually makes the wheels go round. So how does the piston move up and down? This is where the controlled explosions come in. When the piston is at the top of the cylinder so there is only a little space between the top of the piston and the edge of the cylinder, the petrol contained within this small space is ignited by a spark plug. The explosion that follows pushes the piston down. Once the piston reaches the bottom the cylinder is filled with exhaust gases. The energy the piston has keeps it moving so that it comes back up the cylinder, pushing out the exhaust gases through the exhaust pipe and into the air. Once the piston has reached the top, it falls again pulling in petrol from the fuel tank. Again once it's reached the bottom the energy it has keeps it moving so that it pushes back up the cylinder, squashing the petrol. Then you're back to the beginning where the spark plug ignites the petrol.
