The Cask of Amontillado“The Cask of Amontillado” depicts Montresor’s cruel and carefully plotted revenge against Fortunato. Motresor explains how he killed Fortunato but he does not clearly state his motive for the murder in his narration. The only thing that he says explicitly about his motive is the vague “many injuries” that he mentions. It might be guessed that Fortunato has mortally insulted him, which makes Montresor make up cruel murder.

The reason for the homicide of Fortunato is to wreak his wrath and anger about his life which used to be noble and fine once but now is ruined, rather than to revenge to the moral insult from Fortunato. That is, ultimately, what makes him feel defeated is himself not the other person, Fortunato. While Montresor is taking Fortunato to the family burial, Fortunato coughs violently so Montresor says "Come, we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchresiㅡ” Montresor flattered to Fortunato by saying it, but it was
