introduction
First of all, I would like to give you brief information of Annabel Lee.
Written in 1849, “Annabel Lee” was published the same year, just two days after Poe’s death. It appeared in two newspapers, the Richmond Examiner and the New York Tribune. The poem has become one of Poe’s most popular works. Using a melodious narrative form, the speaker laments the death of his beloved young bride Annabel Lee.
Biographers and critics often interpret that "Annabel Lee" was written for Poe`s wife Virginia, who had died two years prior.
they also suggest Poe`s frequent use of the "death of a beautiful woman" theme stems from the repeated loss of women throughout his own life, including his mother Eliza Poe and his foster mother Frances Allan.
The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, Maryland has identified 11 different versions of the poem that were published between 1849 and 1850. among those 11 different versions of the poem, the biggest variation is in the final line:
While the final line of alternative version is "In her tomb by the sounding sea" like the final line of our text book, The final line of original manuscript is "In her tomb by the side of the sea"
