Nowadays, almost every state is operated by the system of electoral democracy. According to the Freedom House, 121 countries out of 192 are under the democracy. In addition, almost every state is under the same economic system of market economy. However, the world before 50 years was not as identical as nowadays. Just after the World War II, the world was generally divided into two divisions, democracy and socialism. The countries based on socialism had their own economic and political structures. In the center of this difference, two superpowers, United States and Soviet Union, were competing for various fields such as military, economy, ideology, and science. Each country had developed a lot of weapons which could be threat to the opponents to show off their own power. This competition not only affected the Pacific Ocean but the Atlantic Ocean too. In Europe, the main pillar of socialism was the former East Germany, surrounded with free countries. Naturally, to secure the liberty in Europe, military alliance was inevitable, and NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Association was established by the reasons above.
To see the contents above in first glance, NATO seems to be the hero for the triumph of the democracy in the world. However, the NATO has negative aspect that is used for interest of petroleum gases of United Sates. In Gulf War I and II, because the United States had asked for the NATO members to participate the war according to the NATO Charter Article 5, not every but some of the member had participated. Was the war against Iraq was just for the elimination of terrorism? The answer is no, Iraq is the second largest producer of petroleum gas in the Middle East Asia.
