Critically discuss notion that Scientific Management was a ‘good’ idea in the history of the management thinking. When students studying management course hear the word the scientific management, the mane Frederick W. Taylor comes to mind immediately.
First of all, what is the scientific management and was it a ‘good’ Idea in the history of management thinking? (Morgen, 2005, p. 89) said, “Over a century after its inception, scientific management was one of the most controversial management theories of all time”. ........
In 1911, Frederick Winslow Taylor published his work, The Principles of Scientific Management, in which he described how the application of the scientific method to the management of workers greatly could improve productivity........
There is a good example, to support the notion that Scientific Management was a ‘good’ idea in the history, so-called ‘pig iron theory’..........
Many of Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, etc., used the Scientific Management and made the good result. Scientific Management in Twentieth-Century Japan is concerned with "the reception and adaptation of American managerial ideas in Japan." These ideas are identified as "Taylorism (also known as Scientific Management)." An ideology is "a complex set of values and imperatives (Taira, 1999, p. 96). William Tsutsui has produced an erudite and polished social history of the role of Scientific Management in the development of twentieth century Japanese industry. Working with an array of Japanese- and English-language materials, he discusses the adoption or celebration of Frederick Taylor`s theories and titutions. (Taira Koji, 1999
