1. In which physical state (solid, liquid, or vapor) does most of Earth’s free water exist? Which physical state accounts for the least?
지구에 있는 전체 물 중에서 약 97.5 퍼센트가 해수이다. 그러므로 액체 상태의 물이 가장 많다. 그리고 지구에 있는 전체 물 중에서 약 0.001% 만이 대기 중에 있다. 그러므로 기체 상태의 물이 가장 적다.
2. Describe the movement of water through the hydrologic cycle. Explain briefly how energy is also cycled by the same process.
물이 바다나 육지에서 증발하면 대기 중에 수증기로 존재한다. 이 수증기는 결국 precipitation이 된다. Precipitation은 runoff(유수), groundwater(지하수), evaporation이나 transpiration(증산작용), 그리고 biosphere에의 흡수로 이어진다.
Runoff가 되면 결국 바다로 흘러간다. Ground water가 되어도 결국 바다로 흘러간다. Evaporation이나 transpiration이 되면 결국 다시 atmosphere가 되는 셈이 된다.
에너지 측면: 해수는 다량의 열을 적도에서 극 지역으로 수송한다. Evaporation은 열을 흡수하고 condensation은 열을 내놓는 역할을 한다. 수증기는 greenhouse gas로서 atmosphere의 온도를 증가시킨다. 하지만 구름과 빙하는 태양 빛을 반사함으로써 지구를 냉각시키는 역할을 한다.
