Strategy : Previewing a Reading
The prefix pre- means "before," so previewing means "viewing (looking) before." It aids comprehension to look through a selection before reading it and predict its contents. Find clues to what the selection is about. Just as it is easier to drive through a neighborhood you know rather than through a strange one, it is easier to read something if you get acquainted with it first.
To preview a reading, look at the title and any photos, charts, or illustrations, the first and last paragraphs, and the first line of each of the other paragraphs. Think about what associations or connections there are between your life and the topic. Ask yourself: What is the topic and what do I already know about it?

접두사 pre는 “전”을 의미하고 previewing은 “미리 본다.”를 뜻한다. 미리 보기를 통해 본문을 읽기 전 선택된 구문을 읽고 전체적인 이해와 내용에 대한 예측을 할 수 있다. 선택된 구문이 무엇에 관한 것인지 단서를 잡아야 한다. 전혀 모르는 곳을 운전하는 것보다 잘 아는 동네를 운전하는 게 더 쉽듯이, 구문들을 한 번 읽고 내용을 알고 읽는 것이 이해하기 쉽다.
본문을 미리 읽으려면 제목과 사진, 도표, 삽화를 보고 처음과 마지막 단락, 모든 단락의 첫 번째 문장을 본다. 주제와 당신의 삶에 어떤 연관성이 있는지 생각해 보자. 주제가 무엇이고 그 주제에 대해 내가 이미 알고 있는 게 뭐가 있는가.
