1. Summary
The Selfish Gene is a book on evolution by Richard Dawkins, published in 1976. Richard Dawkins connected his ethological study to coherent theoretical aspect with respect to the gene. This book develops the theory based on Darwinism and the natural selection, more specifically the gene selection in substance. Dawkins coined the term selfish gene as a way of expressing the gene-centered view of evolution, which holds that evolution is best viewed as acting on genes, and that selection at the level of organisms or populations almost never overrides selection based on genes. He claims that genes are the primary policy-makers; brains are the executives. Therefore, organisms just cannot but be survival machines of genes. An organism is expected to evolve to maximize its inclusive fitness; the number of copies of its genes passed on globally rather than by a particular individual. As a result, populations will tend towards an evolutionarily stable strategy.
2. Review from an economist’s view point.
Even though I read only chapter 1 to 7, I could understand a sort of Dawkins’ point regarding the term selfish gene. It is basically related to the term invisible hand theorized by Adam Smith, the economist.
