In “Love in L.A.” Dagoberto Gilb speaks of a casual, and perhaps meaningless, relationship in our daily lives through a shallow and insincere man, Jake. He is described as a man from a lower social class due to his financial situation. There are several clues that show this lack of money. He cannot afford auto insurance and a better car he has always dreamed of. He is also considered a relatively young person, not only because of his non option car, but also the way he thinks and behaves. He dreams of fancier cars and longer trips, which usually represents goals of the young. His character traits of being irresponsible and paying little attention to reality may also indicate that he is immature yet.
Besides symbolism, there is an irony at the end of the story. In spite of all the flirting, Jake knows he cannot actually call her, even though he has her number. He, then, forgets about the accident and Mariana and goes right back to the traffic with his day dream and "his sense of freedom" (434).
In the last paragraph, the author repeats the same idea of his day dream from the beginning of the story, "FM stereo radio and crushed velvet interior" (434), in order not only to tie the story together as a whole but also to emp
