본문내용
IntroductionThe la subversion des images, or “the disruption of images” is an exposition on surrealist photography and film. This exposition, the most important public one in the world on this subject, allows the viewer to observe the surrealist history and their work. It is also one of the best for understanding the modern art in general, for, if modern art began with cubism, then surrealism enlarged its scope. The works of Man Ray are exhibited here, as he is an important avant-garde artist and surrealist. His work allows us to see the beginning and the development of surrealism, for he is not only one of the genre’s most well-known persons but an artist whose ideas and innovations other surrealists follow. It is therefore natural to wonder: how does la subversion des images present the works of the surrealists, and what is their significance in regards to Man Ray? To begin, I will explain the exposition; following that, I will present a biography of Man Ray and a history of surrealism; finally, I will analyze the importance of Man Ray in surrealism.
I. The Exposition, La subversion des images
1. General Information
La subversion des images presents surrealist photographs and movies, bringing together more than four hundred pieces, the largest exhibition ever to be dedicated to this subject. The exhibition reaches its size by borrowing pieces from other collections, both private and public, a certain number of which are unpublished. It takes place from the 23 of September, 2009, to the 11 of January, 2010, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It considers the photographic and filmic practices of the surrealists with nine sections, each one centered on a key concept of the surrealist movement.
