본문내용
Semiconductor is a group of materials having electric property intermediate of between metals and insulators. There are two kinds of semiconductor; elemental semiconductor and compound semiconductor. Elemental semiconductor is composed only one element column Ⅳ. And compound semiconductor is composed combination of two, three or four elements.
Semiconductor is made in single crystalline material for best performance. Single crystalline materials are ordered in long section. And poly crystalline materials are ordered in short section. And amorphous materials are not ordered.
Lattice is determined by symmetry. When atoms put on lattice sites, we obtain a crystal. Typical semiconductor have FCC lattice. If lattice composed two same atoms, it called ‘Diamond lattice’. And if lattice composed two different atoms, it called ‘Zinc blende’. This division ‘Diamond’ and ‘Zinc blende’ has relation with bonding forces and mechanical, metallurgical and chemical properties.
The basic build block of a lattice is ‘Primitive cell’ having lattice points in each corner. Three intercepts between plane and axes are defined ‘Miller indices’. Miller indices represent plane in a group of numbers inverse of intercepts. Real crystals have defects in 1D, 2D and 3D. Many of them are sinister for device.
