1. Acer`s strategy has been described as "divide and conquer." Explain.
In politics and sociology, divide and conquer is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. In reality, it often refers to a strategy where small power groups are prevented from linking up and becoming more powerful, since it is difficult to break up existing power structures.
Acer Incorporated was founded by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and a group of five others as Multitech in 1976, headquartered in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Acer is a Taiwan-based multinational computer technology and electronics corporation that manufactures desktop and laptop PCs, personal digital assistants (PDAs), servers, storage devices, displays, and peripherals. Acer provides e-business services for business, government, education, and home users. The company also owns the largest franchised computer retail chain in Taipei, Taiwan.
Acer produced equipment on an original equipment manufacturer basis for well-know global companies such as IBM, Dell, and Hitachi.
