모국어의 영향이 외국어 습득에 있어서는 중요한 요소가 된다는 것은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않는 사실이다. 본 고에서는 외국어 습득에 있어서 모국어의 영향에 대하여 설명한 제이언어습득(SLA: second language acquisition) 이론에 대하여 개관하고, 각각의 내용에 대한 연구를 상술하겠다.
2. 모국어의 영향과 관련한 제인언어습득 이론
2.1. 대조분석가설(contrastive analysis hypothesis)
대조분석가설은 임의의 두 가지 언어를 대조함으로써 그 차이점과 유사점을 명확하게 밝혀 언어학습과 관련하여 설명하고자 하고 있다. 이 가설에 따르면 언어를 학습함에 있어서 유사성이 강한 경우는 학습하기 쉬우며, 차이점이 강한 경우는 학습이 곤란하고 오류를 산출하기 쉽다. 이러한 대조분석가설을 처음으로 제창한 연구자는 Lado(1957)이다. 이 연구는 주로 학습자의 목표언어가 영어이며, 학습자의 모국어는 일본어, 스페인어, 독일어, 핀란드어 등 불특정 다수의 언어를 대상으로 하고 있다.
