본문내용
Jonathan Swift was a well-known English satirical writer for his short and long poems. And he became a more astonishing writer after he published his masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels. In Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver makes four voyages to the Lilliput, the Brobdingnag, the Laputa and the country of the Houyhnhnms and compares these countries to England. In each of the four countries, Swift distinguishes their pros and cons and maximizes their positive characteristics in overall structure of countries. As a foreigner, Gulliver tries to adapt to these countries. Throughout Gulliver’s adventures, Swift argues that the readers should realize that utopias are unable to be achieved by imperfect beings like humans; instead, people can aspire to an ideal when they understand their physical and mental limits and also when they can emphasize their positive characteristics.
