This chapter deals with the relationship between thought and words, specifically, whether thought depends on words. Unlike prevalent prejudice which is words determine thoughts in relations to linguistic determinism, the author is inquiring that "if thoughts depended on words, how could a new word ever be coined?". He introduces some misled examples by it.
Firstly, in terms of the linguistic determinism, this author not only disproves Whorf’s explanations, but expands a concept of color in kaleidoscopic flux of impressions and settlesdown this : language draw lines and makes boundaries in the spectrum and development of vocabularies is constrained by how we see colors. He also adds his argue by describing the Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax, Bloom`s book and its flaws.
Secondly, he sums up thought is different from language with two reasons. One is thinking without language is possible and the other is how thinking works. But, there are other languageless beings such as monkeys, babies, and human adults.
