An English political economist Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) argued that population growth was the single most threat to human existence on the earth. Malthus made hypothesis that that the population growth will eventually lead the world to famine since humans need food for their existence, but the population grows faster than food supply, therefore population growth will get ahead of the speed of food supply. Neo-Malthusians adapted his theory by using third world as an example whereas optimists who are against this theory claim that population growth is an improvement of world. Stephen Scanlan (2001) says “the more pessimistic neo-Malthusian and more optimistic technoecological perspectives offer much with regard to the links between food security and the environment” (2001).
