Festival of Flowers
Matisse is known as the father of fauvism (1905~1908), an art movement that challenged impressionism and neo-impressionism. His artworks have been characterized by a number of factors: first, an experimental method using vibrant primary colors; second, figures without gradation or tone; third, abstraction of color based on the essence of the painted object; fourth, portraits based on feelings; and fifth, background and space with many decorative patterns. Often, by putting decorative patterns and the objects of painting within the same dimension, he creates a two-dimensional space. The creation of flatness is also aided by his thick lines that define the outlines of figures and objects and by his focus on the essence of their movement. He is also known to concentrate on the interior space, especially on how light moves around within a created space.
