Scientific Management and the Human Relations Approach
Western Electric (i.e. lighting, temperature, and humidity with the highest priority on lighting). But to the surprise of many, they failed to find a correlation between lighting and production efficiency. The noteworthy part of this experiment began when two Harvard researchers, Elton Mayo and Fritz Roethlisberger, joined the team to further investigate these unexpected results. The outcome of their investigation suggested that workers were responding not to the amount of lighting but to the fact that they were being observed by the experimenters.
2 This phenomenon, known as the Hawthorne effect because the experiments were conducted at the Western Electric Hawthorne plant, was the first widely published document of the psychological effects on work efficiency.
