Analytical Essay of Pride and Prejudice and Porphyria’s Lover
Love is a singular word which, over time, has developed a wide array of meanings and definitions, with each era redefining love in new and novel ways. The novel, Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen and the poem, Porphyria’s Lover, written by Robert Browning contain very different notions of love and each can be seen to illustrate both internal and external conflicts between main characters and highlight the differences of the values and attitudes of their genders and social classes. Pride and Prejudice demonstrates how romantic love or marriage is determined by the surrounding society’s presumptions or prejudices about social class, romance and gender; comparatively, Porphyria’s Lover shows a character who cannot overcome different social classes and consequently reaches an extreme decision to end his love’s life in order to perpetuate their perfect love two literatures, and the personal ideologies of each author.
