Q- Discuss the rise of the English novel with special emphasis on the position of women novelists.
Ans- Technically speaking, with a liberal outlook, towards the sea of knowledge produced by the mighty pen, a novel is a carefully constructed sociological document of prose literature in long narrative which proceeds with the presence of (distinct or sometimes marginalized) characters functioning under the roof of a plot, following a certain chronology of time and space and it stands the test of time. As a work of artistic technique and workmanlike manipulation, the methodological development of the novel has its historical roots in medieval and early modern romance and in the tradition of the novella (an Italian word meaning “new little thing”). By the beginning of the eighteenth century, the quintessential premise and purpose of its subsistence on a realistic platform were fulfilled with swift maturity by the great English novelists namely Defoe, Richardson and Fielding.
