Dehumanization as an Asian American Theme입니다.
“Ajuhma” and “Coming Home Again”by Chang-rae Lee, “Beccah” by Nora Okja Keller, and “Waiting for Mr. Kim” by Carol Roh-Spaulding

Dehumanization as an Asian American Theme
-On “Ajuhma” and “Coming Home Again”by Chang-rae Lee, “Beccah” by Nora Okja Keller, and “Waiting for Mr. Kim” by Carol Roh-Spaulding
Asian American literature is a unique genre of American literature which can be evaluated as a remarkable achievement in English literature. Asian American literature does not possess a long history compared to other genres of English literature. Although immigrants from Asia and Americans of Asian descent have been writing in the United States since the 19th century, Asian American literature as a category of writing only came into existence in the early 1970s.(wikipedia) However, it is noticeable because it represents the voice of Asian Americans who are still regarded as minorities in American society. They speak up for Asian Americans who are still too weak to talk to the dominant society. Since literature is a powerful method to change the society by affecting each person’s way of thinking, I believe that Asian American literature is contributing to enhance the social status of Asian Americans. The pieces I read throughout this course mostly deal with the pain and suffering to live as an alien in the United States. The dominant society keeps othering them and they struggle to fit in the American society. Some people had to sell themselves out and some people had to discard their own cultural ties or some people just gave up with everything.
