Topic - Did African Americans become free
in the half century after the civil war?
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the American Civil War. From this, all the slaves who were in the rebellious states got freedom. As the result of this, many things had been changed. For example, even though it was temporary, the African Americans owned land and mules, had schools, churches, even had the right to vote. It seemed like all African Americans finally got `freedom`. However, it was not true because there were still instances of inequality and much freedom given to African Americans was taken away after 1877.
To explain the reason why the African Americans didn`t have “real freedom”, it is necessary to set a boundary for freedom. Discussing “freedom” is very abstract and ambiguous, setting a boundary for freedom is important to know that, while some parts of freedom were given, other important parts of freedom were not given, or even taken away. In the book “Give Me Liberty”, freedom for African Americans meant “escaping from numerous injustices of slavery -
