Wal-Mart, founded by Sam Walton in 1962, is now the largest retailer in the world. Walton was not exactly a talented business man as he was told by his manager at Penney’s, "Walton, I’d fire you if you weren’t such a good salesman. Maybe you’re just not cut out for retail," (Walton, pp. 17, 18). Nevertheless, he was an active learner and a great leader. He learned by doing and from mentor, association, books, company training classes, competition, and even from any workers despite their social status. Walton said, "…I’d still say that visiting the stores and listening to our folks was one of the most valuable uses of my time as an executive. But really, our best ideas usually do come from the folks in the stores. Period," (Walton, pp.230). Especially, he learned a lot from his competitor, Dunham that he would always hang out across the street to check out how Dunham sets price and displays products. He especially checked out K-mart, which was far ahead of Wal-Mart in early years. Wal-Mart, ranked first on the 2011 Fortune 500, offers the cheapest price on every good in the store, meanwhile it guarantees the fine qualities of the products. Despite all the facts that look like they are contributing to the world on the surface, Wal-Mart has greater detrimental effects on society. Wal-Mart’s strategic low pricing which is also said to be price discrimination is a common denominator and a cause of all the evil consequences.
