Predictably Irrational is written by Dan Ariely, a Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University (Ariely, 2011). This book is about behavioral economics, which use cognitive and emotional factors to understand the economic decisions of individuals and institutions performing economic functions. (The new Palgrave dictionary of economics, 2008) The author states that if society accepts the idea that human can be predictably irrational, then social improvements could be made. In this book review, I will provide a brief synopsis of the book, while discussing whether the author’s logic is right or wrong. Sometimes, I will make some other suggestions or add examples to the author’s experiments and thoughts. The very first chapter, “The Truth about Relativity”, says that people care about relativeness, not absoulteness. For example, people are happy when they feel equal to other people (Wilkinson, 2005). That is why poor countries, like Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, or Jamaica were ranked very high in Happy Planet Index in 2009 (Abdallah et al, 2009). Because other industrialized countries have a huge income gap among social classes, people who live there feel less happiness. (Rousseau, 2009)
