Cultural Conflicts are Represented Internally and Externally
in the Story “Mrs. Sen” Written by Jhumpa Lahiri
In the story of “Mrs. Sen”, the writer Jhumpa Lahiri is talking about an episode of a boy named Eliot and his babysitter Mrs. Sen who came from India. Mrs. Sen hardly can understand American lifestyle which is quite different from India, so she can’t adjust herself to America. Due to theses cultural conflicts come from different life styles, she feels loneliness and misses her hometown internally. At some point, this internal conflict is expressed externally, which is shown at the ending of the story. Such process in which her internal conflicts are represented externally is critical in the development of the story.
At the initial stage, her internal cultural conflicts come from two factors- her own maladjustment (internal factor) and pressure by others (external factor). The different lifestyles of America and India make her feel that she is “alienated” from other people. The episode of blade which she explained to Eliot is an example.
