Macbeth the Tragic Hero
"Take a good man, a noble man, a man admired by all who know him-and destroy him, not only physically and emotionally, as the Greeks destroyed their heroes, but also morally and intellectually" (Booth 91). It is a definition about a tragic hero, which William Shakespeare often uses in his plays. Macbeth was a lead character and also is a tragic hero in the play Macbeth. He was a brave, royal, worthy man. Furthermore, he was admired by the people that followed him and he was one of Duncan`s most glorious general. However, his ambition, pride, and fear were the three factors that contributed to the flaws in Macbeth`s character as well as the reasons that cause his downfall.
At the first part of the play, Shakespeare focused on how Macbeth was a hero in everyone`s eyes, a loyal subject to his majesty king Duncan, and a great husband to Lady Macbeth. For example, in act 1-scene 2, Macbeth personally sweeped away the rebel Macdonwald, and he won the battle with the Norwegian enemy. He was "a brave soldier, strong physically, an inspiring leader and brilliant general" (Roberts 10). He devoted himself to protect his country and his king.
