part two: Immigrants make lasting contributions
본문내용
Good morning everyone. Today, I want to talk to you about the experience of immigrants who came to United States from the middle of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth centuries. From a… about 1840 to about 1917. As you know, there is a strong prejudice against these early immigrants. But even so, these groups were able to make important and lasting contributions to American society. So, for the next few minutes, I’m going to discuss both of these parts of the immigrant experience. The prejudice as well as the contributions. Now, just to remind you, the four major groups that immigrated to US during this time were the Germans, the Irish, the Jews from Russia and the Italians. Of course, there were many other immigrants. For instance, from Poland, Greece, Hungary, China and Mexico. And all of them met with a lot of prejudice in this country. And by prejudice I mean that Americans did things like calling them cruel names or refusing to let them rent an apartment or refusing to give them a job. So now, what were some of the reasons for this?
