The increased need for electricity can be directly attributed to the increases in the population and the rise in the standard of living of the citizens. Based upon a census starting point of 180 million people in 1960, the projected population will increase due to immigration from 303 million in 2008, to 380 million in 2030, and then to 438 million by the year 2050. (Haub 1) Larger populations require more electricity. As the standard of living rises for these consumers, they will buy more conveniences which require an even greater amount of electrical energy. With the increase in oil prices driving up gasoline prices, there is a push for Congress to require automobile companies to produce electric cars. Switching cars from using internal combustion engines to electricity will only shift our energy usage and further expand our need for electricity.

The biggest argument against nuclear power is the potential danger of nuclear power generation. Opponents use the accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl as proof that nuclear power is unsafe. The only U.S. nuclear accident occurred at the Three Mile Island (TMI) plant in Pennsylvania in 1979. According to author Samuel Walker in his book, Three Mile Island: A Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective, the accident “did not produce a catastrophe by releasing large amounts of radiation to the environment.” No TMI deaths or injuries occurred. Unfortunately two weeks before the incident, “The China Syndrome” movie was released which depicted a very similar, fictitious nuclear accident that greatly exaggerated the public’s fear and fueled negative reactions. The combination of the horrific movie followed by the real nuclear accident at TMI had a detrimental impact on the support for nuclear energy. Following the accident, “the nuclear industry and the [U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission] NRC drew on lessons from Three Mile Island to make a series of improvements designed to prevent the occur¬rence of another serious accident” and reduced any minor dangers that existed. The following table provides evidence of the improved nuclear safety record:
